Amoxicillin (also spelled amoxycillin in some regions) is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics worldwide. It belongs to the penicillin class (beta-lactam antibiotics) and works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of susceptible bacteria. It is effective against many gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria, but not against viruses, fungi, or resistant strains.
